CINELDI wraps up, SecurEL takes over: Continuing the journey to a greener grid
CINELDI was established in 2016 by the Norwegian Research Council as an 8-year FME- program (Research centre for Environment-friendly Energy). The purpose was to form a research arena that included researchers, TSOs, DSOs and technology providers.
The aim was to build knowledge of how the electricity grid will need to transform to support the green shift by changing the way electricity is distributed and understanding how technology can be developed to enable the transformation.
The main challenges for the program were:
- Fast growth in energy consumption over a relatively short time span caused by electrification of transport and industry,
- Increase in local production, creating up-stream flow of energy,
- Long lead time for building new physical grid infrastructure
Over the 8-year program, a huge number of findings and results have been achieved. Development of a flexibility market enabling a more dynamic distribution of energy where it is needed at a time has been one of the main focus areas. Another example is the methodology and technology that provides more grid capacity, optimising physical cable usage by new algorithms and sensor technology in a dynamic operation of the grid. Additionally, several other innovations essential for the grid’s future transformation have been established. A more comprehensive list of the initiatives can be found here: https://www.sintef.no/projectweb/cineldi/innovation/
To conclude the program, CINELDI has developed a strategy and roadmap outlining the transition to a flexible and intelligent power grid. The report was handed over to Minister of Energy Mr. Terje Aasland during the CINELDI’s closing conference in Trondheim 5-6 November. The report is available here: rapport_cineldi-transisjonsstrategi_engelsk.pdf
Aidon has been part of the consortia since the beginning. We have contributed to several projects with competences, as well as our smart meter technology. Together with our customer Lnett we have been responsible for piloting a solution for Earth Fault detection and automation of the fault handling. The result of that pilot is now implemented in Lnett. Aidon will make it as a general offer to other DSOs in the market. Furthermore, by taking part in some of the pilot projects we have gained new knowledge on how smart meters can support the grid with essential data to enable automation and efficient operation. A list of all the pilot projects is available here: https://www.sintef.no/projectweb/cineldi/pilot-projects-in-cineldi/.
CINELDI has been an important door opener for Aidon into a wider part of the energy industry, and a great arena for testing and utilising our technology in new settings. We have therefore decided to be a partner also in the new FME “SecurEL” project which will be running in the period of 2025-2032 with more than 40 partners. As we now will enter the SecurEL program, Aidon searches for partners to cooperate with to create new pilots, supporting the programs targets. We encourage our customers to challenge us with relevant use cases for the development of a secure, resilient and sustainable power grid for the future.
