AMM-based Earth fault detection won Smart Grid Innovation Prize in Norway

Norwegian Smartgrid Center awarded its annual Innovation Prize during Smart Grid Conference, 17th September in Oslo. This year the prize was given to Norway’s largest DSO Elvia for the project “Earth Fault Detection with AMM”. The functionality is based on the Aidon meters’ earth fault detection feature which was developed for the Norwegian market.

The Innovation Award is Smartgrid Center’s recognition of outstanding Norwegian smart grid projects, programs and activities. This year’s award highlights groundbreaking solutions that show how we can use today’s power grid more safely and efficiently. The jury has particularly emphasized projects that contribute to better utilization of existing infrastructure and thus support a rapid and safe green transition. Elvia has completed a project where data from smart meters is used to identify earth faults quickly and precisely. Using machine learning models, the tool can read AMM data from customers, and effectively identify what kind of faults may have occurred.

The project has impressed the jury. Earth fault detection is complicated and difficult to detect. Elvia has developed a system that detects faults in real time with very high accuracy, while also providing automated and user-friendly follow-up. The solution is already in operation for over 750,000 customers having a Aidon smart meter, and has contributed to earth faults being handled quickly, often by the customers themselves. It shows how machine learning can use AMM data in a new and effective way to strengthen both personal safety and grid operation.
